How Non-Profits Can Use the DISC with Volunteers

3/28/2023

Non-profit organizations rely heavily on their volunteers to fulfill their mission and make a positive impact in their community. However, managing volunteers can be a challenging task, especially when dealing with different personalities and communication styles. That's where the DISC model comes in — a tool that can help non-profits understand their volunteers better and improve their communication and engagement strategies.

The DISC model is a behavioral assessment tool that measures four distinct types: Dominant, Influencing, Steady, and Compliant. Each trait represents a particular communication and work style, and individuals can be classified into one or more of these categories based on their personality and behavior. Here are some ways non-profit organizations can use the DISC model with their volunteers:

  1. Identify communication preferences: By understanding their volunteers' DISC profiles, non-profits can identify their communication preferences and adjust their communication style accordingly. For example, if a volunteer is the Influencing type, they may prefer a more collaborative and social approach, whereas a volunteer who is the Compliant type may prefer a more detailed and structured communication style.

  2. Assign tasks based on strengths: The DISC model can help non-profits identify their volunteers' strengths and assign tasks accordingly. For instance, a volunteer who is the Dominant type may excel in leadership roles, while a volunteer who is the Steady type may be better suited for administrative tasks that require attention to detail.

  3. Improve teamwork and collaboration: By understanding the DISC profiles of their volunteers, non-profits can improve teamwork and collaboration. They can form teams that balance different personality types, so everyone can contribute their strengths and work together effectively.

  4. Provide personalized training and development: The DISC model can help non-profits provide personalized training and development to their volunteers. For example, a volunteer who is the  Influencing type may benefit from training in public speaking and networking, while a volunteer who is the in Compliant type may benefit from training in project management and time management.

  5. Improve volunteer retention: By understanding their volunteers' DISC profiles and providing personalized communication and engagement strategies, non-profits can improve volunteer retention. Volunteers who feel understood and appreciated are more likely to continue their involvement with the organization.

The DISC model can be a valuable tool for non-profit organizations to understand their volunteers better, improve their communication and engagement strategies, and ultimately, make a greater impact in their community. By utilizing the DISC model, non-profits can create a more fulfilling and productive volunteer experience for their volunteers and achieve their mission more effectively.
